What a primary homeschooling day looks like with Lionheart Education

When you want to give your child the best possible start on their education journey, a tailored homeschooling program designed around them is an excellent option. GOV.UK home education advice confirms that you can educate your child at home from any age, and you don’t have to follow the National Curriculum to the letter. We capitalise on this educational freedom and create a primary homeschooling curriculum that covers all of the basics and much more, giving your child the ability to study topics of interest.

Lessons for primary homeschooling are usually quite short, from 20 to 40 minutes, and can include everything from music and reading to outdoor learning and subject-specific focus. 

The curricula we cover with primary homeschooling

Homeschooling doesn’t have to cover the National Curriculum taught in schools; however, it’s an excellent framework for making sure all of the boxes are ticked so your child is learning at the same level and even beyond their peers in mainstream school.

We cover everything your child needs and more, with an introduction to not only the basics of literacy and numeracy, but language learning and arts too, all delivered in a one-to-one environment in your London home or online. Book discussions, reading confidence, handwriting and creative writing all make up our foundation years homeschooling sessions, and mental arithmetic and problem-solving are introduced at the child’s pace for numeracy.

Additionally, we can offer broad and specific tuition for homeschooled primary children in History, Geography, Spanish, Art, and more, giving a much more flexible timetable that suits their style of learning and your family timetable.

For international families, we are familiar with the IB Primary Years Programme to prepare them for teenage years IB courses, and we also offer SEND homeschooling tuition for primary children with ADHD, anxiety, and autism, as well as learning difficulties.

Primary homeschooling with a view to reintegration

For many families, primary home education may become permanent, or it might be a pathway to reintegration with mainstream schooling in Year 7 or earlier, and Lionheart Education is here to support you whatever your decision. Transition to schooling requires different learning goals, and it might be a good idea to stick more closely to the curriculum if you are thinking about primary homeschooling with a view to 11+ or 13+ school entry ahead of formal assessments. We assess your child’s academic level and design the programme around them so you can follow it on your own, or with the help of our specialist primary school tutors when you’re homeschooling.

    We offer a comprehensive curriculum as well as acting as programme coordinator, whether you choose lessons in your home in London, online, or at our Lionheart School London in W14. You can even choose a mixture of all three if it suits your family routine, and introduces primary homeschool socialisation, which can often be a source of concern for homeschooling parents.

  • Preparing for Year 7

    In the upper years of junior school, children are beginning to prepare both socially and academically for Year 7, and our tutors take that into account with timed mathematic tests and developing stronger writing habits. This differs from early years and nursery admissions as we create a bespoke programme that aligns them with their peers, but also offers the opportunity to go deeper on topics that they are interested in to develop specialisms ahead of GCSE.

  • How many hours should a primary homeschool day be?

    At the youngest end of the scale, a child in Reception to Year 2 only needs 2 to 3 hours of focused studies per day, and this can be in the form of games, stories, outdoor play, and practical work. From Year 3 until the end of primary school in Year 6, children can handle 5 or 6 hours of schoolwork, but as a Lionheart Education programme is tailored to your child and family, we can show you how to get the most out of each hour without overwhelming them.

  • Can I homeschool a Reception-age child?

    Legally, you can homeschool a child of any age, including in the Reception years. At this young age, sessions don’t need to be intensive, as a lot of their learning is made complete through fun activities. Sessions can include everything from phonics and number work to stories, songs and playing in the local park. Exploration is key, and we build on skills they’ll need in later years such as listening carefully, paying attention, forming their handwriting, and developing confidence in reading.

  • Will my child be behind if they return to primary school?

    This is a valid concern of homeschooling parents, but just because your primary child is being home educated doesn’t mean they will be behind if you choose to return them to school. In fact, with the proper tuition and planning, many primary home educated children return to mainstream education with reading, reasoning, and mathematical confidence skills higher than their peers.   • What about socialisation for homeschooled primary children?

    Homeschooled children can miss out on the daily interactions with other children, but there are lots of options available to home-educating parents to counteract this.   • Do you follow the National Curriculum for primary home education?

    The National Curriculum is undoubtedly a useful framework when home educating, but if it doesn’t suit your particular educational aims for your child, it can be adapted as necessary. For families returning children to full-time school education, it’s helpful to stick as closely as possible to it so there are no gaps in learning. However, Lionheart Education’s programmes for primary children will always cater to the child’s age, ability, and aptitude as required by UK law. 

  • Can a primary homeschooler sit the 11+?

    We work with many families who are preparing their child for school entry at various ages, whether it’s the  7+, 8+, or 11+. Our tutors will deliver the preparation with an integrated approach to ensure that all of the basic numeracy and literacy skills are covered. We will also work closely with your child to improve confidence in interviews and verbal & non-verbal reasoning skills for a holistic educational approach.
