What does the 11+ process test?
Lionheart Education has been preparing children for the 11+ since 1989, so you can guarantee we are familiar with every aspect of the examinations at this age. However, the 11+ is not one single exam and admissions to Year 7 can cover a variety of formats, so it’s wise to find out exactly what a school will require and prepare accordingly.
We do offer a separate school placement consultancy service for state, independent, boarding, and international schools so you can know the requirements of each institution. The 11+ in its most basic form tests Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning, and Non-Verbal Reasoning. With so many different parts to cover, each contributing a significant amount to the final score, it’s sensible for children to attend revision courses for 11+ as early as possible to ensure that every aspect is covered. For English, comprehension tasks and creative writing sit alongside basic grammar and spelling, whereas students can expect geometry, fractions, and arithmetic for Maths.
Lionheart tutors will always discern the level a student is learning at and make sure that there are no gaps in knowledge ahead of the examinations. Language-based problems, sequences, and coding form the verbal reasoning part of the tests, and non-verbal testing usually involves pattern identification and making relationships between images or shapes.
In addition to the standardised 11+, many schools will also use assessment factors such as the ISEB Common Pre-Test, GL Assessments, the CSSE format in Essex, and also the requirements of the London 11+ Consortium used by more than a dozen top-league London schools. We help children prepare for tests in London, like the Westminster Under School 11+ exam or the St Paul’s Girls’ School 11+ exam, which are school-specific.
