Guidance for UK and international applicants

Some students are still choosing A-Level subjects. Others are already in Year 12 or Year 13 with deadlines closing in. Our university admissions consultants work at both ends of that, covering subject choice, predicted grades, personal statement help, admissions tests and interview preparation. Lionheart has advised London families on higher education for more than three decades.

University places are competitive, so planning six to twelve months ahead makes a real difference, particularly for Oxbridge and the Ivy League. Plenty of families come to us later than that, worried about an admissions test or a change in predicted grades, and we start from wherever the student actually is.

We take students through UCAS application support, personal statement development, and a proper comparison of the same course at different universities. For international families that includes presenting IB or AP qualifications well when applying from the United States, China or Europe. The work is part strategy and part sounding board.

UCAS

We provide UCAS application support at every stage of the process, up to and including final submission. That covers a review of the academic profile, strategic shortlisting, support with predicted grades and school references, and a personal statement that matches what the course actually asks for. Oxbridge

Our Oxbridge service covers the particular demands of these applications. We guide students through college and course selection, admissions test preparation, super-curricular enrichment and subject-specific interview training. Many of our consultants studied at Oxford or Cambridge themselves, so the college choice advice comes from people who know the difference between them.

Medical and dental school

Applying to medicine, dentistry or veterinary science needs planning against criteria that are set years ahead. We advise on university selection, help students frame their work experience, and support UCAT preparation. We help aspiring law students through the LNAT pathway, choose the right institutions, and refine their written work. LNAT preparation covers the multiple-choice section and the essay, and builds the skills underneath both: constructing an argument, reading closely, and writing with precision. Students in Year 12 or Year 13 can also take tailored LNAT tuition ahead of the test.

International applications

Students applying to the US, Canada, Europe or Asia are paired with a consultant who knows that system. For US applications that means Common App strategy, personal essay editing, and planning around the SAT, ACT and AP. Personal statement help

A personal statement is the applicant’s one chance to say who they are, what they have done to prepare, and why they want the course. Admissions teams reading hundreds of them are looking for purpose.

Personal statement help does not mean we write it. It means we help students choose the right evidence, understand what the course actually teaches, sharpen the argument and write clearly. The student is always the author, and we do not provide templates, because no two applications are the same.

UCAS guidance gives a broad steer on what to include, and it is easy to lose direction inside it. Sometimes a student knows exactly what they want to say and the words will not come. That is where editorial feedback does the most good.

What does a university admissions consultant do?

A university admissions consultant helps a student choose the universities and courses that fit their intended path, then supports the application itself. That covers shortlisting, managing deadlines, strengthening the written side of the application, and preparing for admissions tests and interviews.
When should we begin the university application process?

Preparation ideally begins in Year 12, so that A-Level subject choices, super-curricular activity, work experience and predicted grades all align ahead of the deadlines. We also work with students on accelerated timelines and during gap years. For Oxbridge and US applications we support the whole process, including interview preparation.
Can Lionheart write my university personal statement?

No. Our consultants take an editorial role, reviewing the statement and giving feedback on relevance, structure, and whether the student’s strengths are coming through. The student is always the author. We do not provide personal statement templates, because every application is different.
Can you support students applying to universities outside the UK?

Yes. We work with students applying to the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia. That includes supplementary essays, transcripts, planning around the SAT and ACT, Common App strategy, and advice on how A-Level, IB and other grading systems are read abroad.
What distinguishes Oxbridge, medicine or law applications?

These applications demand earlier planning and more evidence of genuine commitment. Course choice has to be specific, and students need to show the extra work they have done. Testing is tailored: TSA and MAT on Oxbridge routes, UCAT for medicine, LNAT for law. Interviews are designed to test intellectual rigour rather than rehearsed answers.
How do you handle personal statements and application essays?

We work iteratively with the student on narrative, tone, evidence and structure. Nothing is templated and nothing is written for them. The finished statement is the student’s own work, which is what universities require and what interviewers will expect them to defend.
What happens if our child needs academic support, or their profile is not yet competitive?

We assess readiness at the outset and, if required, integrate tailored tuition or mentoring into the consultancy programme, so the student is in the strongest possible position when applications are submitted.
How do you work with international or overseas families
