Why biology often feels more difficult than expected
In GCSE Biology and A-Level Biology, students are expected to balance their recall of factual information with unseen examination questions that use the same information presented in a different way. A child may have never heard of some of the chemicals or enzymes presented in a biology exam, but using their gained knowledge they are expected to apply this to the question.
It involves analysing data in graph form, evaluating the effectiveness of experiments, and explaining key processes using precise language. In biology, it’s not enough to know what happens during phenomena like mitosis or immunity; they need to know how to express it in any given situation. Even the most capable students can struggle to adapt to this, and revision alone is not enough if they are unable to translate their knowledge into the way the mark scheme requires.
Our private biology tutors understand how to help students of all ages unlock this skill and present what they’ve learned in a way that ticks all of the boxes examiners are looking for. What’s more, this skill is also useful in a range of other subjects such as mathematics, chemistry, and physics.
