Why the right maths tutor matters

The difference between a child who can do maths and a child who enjoys it often comes down to one person. A fourteen-year-old who thinks algebra is pointless tends to see it differently when the tutor explaining it happens to work in data science.

We’ve placed students at Westminster, St Paul’s, and Eton. We’ve helped others move from a predicted 5 at GCSE to an 8. The constant is this: we match tutors to students based on where they are now and where they need to be, academically and socially.

Our mathematics tutors include Cambridge graduates, former Olympiad competitors, and professionals who use advanced mathematics in their work. Some teach full-time at Lionheart School; others balance tutoring with their careers.

What they share is the ability to explain why a method works, not just how to apply it. That distinction matters. It’s the difference between a student who can pass an exam and one who genuinely understands the subject.

How we find the right maths tutor for each child

Our selection process is rigorous for this key subject, and less than 1% of tutors that apply to work for Lionheart are accepted. You can be confident that each maths tutor is thoroughly interviewed and vetted before working with our families and their children.

The selection process for mathematics tutors prioritises two things: subject mastery and the ability to explain complex ideas clearly. A first-class degree matters. So does knowing when to slow down and when a different approach is needed.

Many of our tutors have worked with students who believed they were “bad at maths” and helped them discover otherwise. The shift from confusion to confidence can happen quickly when the explanation finally makes sense

What our maths tutors cover

from primary entrance exams to university preparation:

  • 11+ Preparation Maths Tutors

The 11+ tests problem-solving, not just arithmetic. Our tutors work through practice papers, timed exercises, and the specific question styles used by schools such as City of London, Westminster Under, and King’s College School. Most students see marked improvement in speed and confidence within six weeks.

We cover number fluency, percentages, ratios, fractions, and basic algebra—the foundations tested at 11+. For scholarship candidates, we include the more demanding problems that separate strong applicants from exceptional ones. Sessions are adapted to each child’s starting point, whether they need to build core understanding or tackle advanced problem-solving under time pressure.

  • GCSE Maths Tutors

GCSE mathematics covers statistics, geometry, algebra, and problem-solving across tiered papers. Our tutors assess where your child is now, identify gaps in understanding, and build from there. Most students improve their predicted grade by one to two levels.

We work with all exam boards—AQA, Edexcel, OCR, WJEC. Beyond teaching content, we focus on exam technique: how questions are structured, how marks are awarded, and how to answer efficiently under timed conditions. Whether the goal is moving from a 5 to a 7 or securing a pass in a subject they have struggled with, the approach is the same: clear explanations, consistent practice, and steady progress.

  • A-Level Maths Tutors

A-Level mathematics is a step change from GCSE. Calculus, mechanics, and advanced algebra require not just new techniques but a different way of thinking. Our tutors—many with degrees in mathematics, engineering, or physics—explain how topics connect, not just how to solve individual problems.

This approach matters for students heading to university courses in engineering, economics, or the sciences, where mathematical reasoning is foundational. We cover all exam boards and work with students whether they need to consolidate understanding, improve exam performance, or prepare for STEP and MAT entrance tests.

Maths tuition in person or online

Lionheart Education understands that every family is different and we will always aim to fit into your routine to make tuition easy. Many families prefer the convenience of online maths tuition, but others prefer home-learning in a comfortable environment for more focused study. We offer both formats so families can pick and choose the arrangement that suits them best.

As many of our tutors are London-based, we can arrange lesson delivery in person for mathematics alongside tuition in all other subjects. This is beneficial for students who prefer a quieter, more structured approach to learning with one-to-one home tuition sessions outside of school.

When you choose our online tuition for mathematics, our tutors use a wide selection of tools such as screen sharing and digital whiteboards so concepts and calculations can be explained clearly step by step. This type of study is ideal for families whose busy schedules or home location might make in-person lessons difficult to arrange. Online tutors are able to work with students attending boarding schools outside of their school day, to support their lessons.

"Grainne was a great support to my 13 year old daughter, specifically with maths and NVR prep alongside interview practice for 14 plus school entrance exams. We highly recommend her."

Natasha M, mother of GCSE student

"Only 3½ months since we asked you to take our daughter on, she has discovered how much fun learning is, has done her GCSEs and got a place at Stowe. We can't believe how well she has done."

Frequently asked questions

  • Will a private maths teacher travel to our home in London?

Many of our Lionheart maths tutors are based in London, so we are able to provide first-class, in-person lesson delivery to families in London. This allows students to work in a familiar environment, which allows them to concentrate more and engage with the topic at hand. Maths tutors will bring all of the teaching materials required and adapt lessons based on the age and stage of your child.

  • What GCSE maths grades do your tutors typically achieve for students?

Mathematics results at GCSE can depend on a range of factors, including the time available for tuition before the examinations and a student’s commitment to the work. We focus on helping the child to develop a clear understanding of the principles at work and how to improve examination performance, and many students will see predicted grade improvement by at least one or two levels.

  • Do you offer maths tuition for primary school children?

Primary school is one of the best times to start maths tuition for children, as it’s at this stage that number fluency is beginning to develop. Whether it’s gaining knowledge of fractions, multiplication or division, our tutors will develop mathematical confidence in children, especially if they have started to feel frustrated or confused at school as more difficult problem-solving is required.

  • How often should my child have maths tuition?

For many students, one session with a dedicated maths tutor per week is enough to strengthen understanding and address any areas they’re finding difficult so they can progress to more difficult problems. Around examination periods, some families chose to increase mathematics tutoring sessions online or in person to two per week to solidify key concepts and feel confident in exam conditions.

  • How much does a maths tutor cost in London?

The cost of a maths tutor in London with Lionheart depends on factors such as the level being studied, as well as a student’s attainment. Our fees reflect the high calibre of our tutors and the care we take in matching them to your child’s unique requirements.

  • Do you offer maths tuition for students with SEND?

Yes, we excel at offering maths tuition to children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities. We understand that one-to-one support is crucial in this subject. Lionheart tutors go the extra mile to determine a child’s needs from the very first session and will develop a solid plan that is tailored to serve their unique needs. With continual feedback between parent/carer, the child, and our tutor, your child can unlock their potential and thrive academically.
